GORDON
KINSON
Sorry to have
to open on a sad note; one of our most active hunting families, recently
experienced
the sudden loss of father and husband. Dr.
Gordon Kinson, a retired University of Ottawa Professor,
has been a steady and frequent helping hand at the club.
He was the sort of person you didn’t really notice a lot until he’s
not there anymore. He leaves his
wife Joyce, a long time hunting member and current Board member, his daughter
and one of our regular whips, Gillian, and up and coming Geoffrey.
We miss you Gordon and give our condolences to your family.

MASTER’S
MEETING AND HOUND SHOW
I attended the
Master’s Meeting and the Canadian Foxhound Show, the latter at the
Eglinton and
Caledon Kennels, June 6/7. We
missed the Bethany Hills/Frontenac Hunt
which has
recently closed operations. Antony
took a small number of hounds but
did the OVH proud. The details are
in his report below, with placings including two wins, two seconds, and a third.
Thanks and Congratulations to Tony and special Thanks to
Pam for her
help. We are indebted to the
Huntsman Steve Clifton and Eglinton and
Caledon for
their hospitality.
HUNTSMAN’S
CORNER
What a fun
time we are having, not any hunting to speak of because of the enormous amount
of rain, hounds and horses are as fit as they can be but nothing to do.
We have
been
exercising hounds and horses since the first of April, it has now got very
boring but we cannot do anything about the weather.
On a better
note we went to the Canadian Hound Show and did very well; we were 2nd
In the
Stallion Hound class with Sounder ’97 (Blueridge Stormforce – TNY Worthy
’94)
1st
in the Crossbred Novice division with Dempsey (Buchanan’s Tom –
Eglinton and Caledon Debra 96). The
Bitch classes took place in the afternoon where we had more
success in the
Novice Entered Bitch with 1st
Briar (West Percy Briton ’96 – TNY Fortune ’98). 2nd
Brilliant (West Percy Briton ’96 – TNY Fortune ’98) 3rd Biro
(Cotswold Bisley ’94 – OVH Wayward ’93).;
It was a very good show, I was very pleased with our hounds; out of ten
packs at the end of the day on points we were 5th. For me it
was a pleasure to see two of Briton’s pups placed; as you may remember I
brought him with me from England. Thanks
to Steve and Kim at the Eglinton and Caledon for putting the hounds and myself
up and a special thanks to Pam for helping on the day.
See you all
soon,
Antony
OVH
EVENTERS
OVH Board
member, Mark Nelson with his young mare Billie (“Good-to-Go”) continues to
excite. They ran in their first
Intermediate at Grandview in May; Mark and Billie were an
impressive 5th in a strong field of 38. They went again in an Open Intermediate at Checkmate two
weeks later and were a bang up.. Mark
is also getting great ribbons on his young Training and Prelim horses.
If you want to see some really exciting eventing, come out and watch Mark
compete Billie and friends.
Hiliary Popiel
continues to be one of our strongest young riders. She was second at Grandview and won the Capital Equestrian
Event at Training level.
We look
forward to more results from our Hunt eventers.
OVH
HORSE SHOW
Tim, Grits and
Lindsay are once again hosting a horse show at their beautiful Sunset
Farms
Saturday, July 6th.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – CALL Grits ASAP at
836-1289 or
836-3456.
WELCOME
“ THE HORSE PEOPLE”
The OVH has
created a new kind of membership, which we’re calling a Corporate
Membership.
This is a result of a proposal by Bev and Wolf Schinke (“The Horse
People”) and will require a by-law change.
The process is for the Board to develop the new By-Law.
This then needs to be ratified by the membership at the next General
Meeting. The Immediate result is
that several of the Horse People clients, many of who you’ve met capping, will
be out hunting with us this season.
HUNTER
PACE
Please be sure
to bring lots of guests to our Summer Hunter Pace on Sunday, July 7th.
This is always
a big event for the club; everyone’s
participation is important.
NEW ROOF
ON CLUBHOUSE
A few weeks
back, a big wind storm removed a large portion of our roof – which was overdue
to reshingle anyway. The Club owes
a major big THANK YOU to
FRANK
MCPHAIL and helper ART MELBOURNE; they gave us a real deal
on a new roof – a big help to the club and much appreciated.
SEPTEMBER
OPENING HUNT
Mark this on
your calendar – always a big event. If
any of you haven’t given Joan Gauer the date for your Greenbox this fall,
please do so ASAP. We hope to have
some better weather for hunting; as you are all too aware, we’ve lost a lot of
our spring hunting due to continuous rain.
MCMULLLEN
POOL PARTY
Just a reminder to anyone whose been on another planet for the past ten decades
July 1st
is the annual G.B. and major pool party at the McMullen’s.
(1:00 o’clock start).
Here’s
hoping we can get a couple hunts in before the end of the spring card.
Until next
time
