August 2004

Hi Everyone!

The summer is shooting by. We'll be out in less than a month, so be sure to be ready for a quick start.

I attended the Masters meeting in June held at the London Hunt. Much of the discussion centered on new members from the equestrian community. The challenge seems to be a common one for all hunts - how to get equestrians of all ages to try our sport. Once they do, many discover how much they like it. We at the Ottawa Valley have been fairly successful in getting new members because of the efforts of many members, through the Hunter Pace, Stable days, personal contacts, etc. However, if we're to grow, we need to be aware that we need to actively introduce potential members to this great sport.

The Canadian foxhound show is held in conjunction with the Masters meeting; we had a perfect sunny day on the beautiful London Hunt grounds and the numbers of entries were down from other years but a high quality turnout nonetheless. We took 13 hounds - see Huntsman corner below for results.

We had another very successful hunter pace in July - special thanks to Peter, Dennis, Joan, Joyce, those Corgi people, Don Reasin, the Walker's, the Weynerowski's , Jack Hicks and of course to all those whom I've left out!

As this goes to press, Gary Hobin and helpers are gearing up for our annual golf tourney and steak night Saturday August 7th.

Sunset Farms is putting on an OVH treasure hunt on Sunday, August 29th 2004 - always lots of fun. Call Grits for details. Come and have a blast.

HUNTSMAN CORNER,

Here we are about to start a new season, I am really looking forward to it.

We have some new hounds from Toronto North York and Eglington Caledon, one of which is a Penn-Marydell, which is a bitch I have been trying to acquire for a while. She is a different type of hound not only in look but in how she hunts.

We had great fun at the hound show in London. I took 13 hounds and brought home 9 ribbons.
1st Entered bitch - Bashful
2nd Novice dog - Hereford
2nd Novice bitch - Mayhem
2nd Novice bitch - Signal
2nd Terrier - Bertha
3rd In Pack Class
4th Couples - Dainty and Naughty
4th Dalesman - Naughty - Dainty - 2 of his get
4th Couples Bitch's - Maybe , Mayhem

I was very very proud of the hounds and I hope you are too. Thank you Michael Deverell and Ted Thomas who helped out at the show.

Hound exercise starts the first Monday of August. Anyone wishing to come please call before 8 pm the night before.

Good Hunting, see you in the field.

Your Huntsman
Antony Gaylard
