GREENBOXES

What is a "greenbox"? We are a very social, fun-loving club and one of the benefits of our hunt club is dining together.

We are privileged to meet and hunt in the Ashton area, where we traverse a cross-country territory spanning more than 1,000 acres. After almost every hunt, our members and guests will meet back at the OVH clubhouse to enjoy a meal together. This unique tradition is known as a “greenbox”, where we mingle and dine with our fellow riders and social members. Best of all, these after-hunting gatherings are included in your hunting fees.  Cappers are welcome!

Which OVH members will host a greenbox?

Senior hunting members

One greenbox per year; first-year members do not have to host a greenbox.

Social members

One greenbox every other year; first-year members do not have to host a greenbox.

As part of your responsibility for hosting the greenbox, you are also expected to provide the “stirrup cup” just before the hunt leaves to follow the hounds on the drag trail. This is traditionally a port or sherry wine, together with a non-alcoholic selection (such as lemonade) which is served by the host to mounted riders, in the field outside the hunt club.

How do I sign up for a greenbox?

An email is sent out early in the hunt season, giving members the dates of available greenboxes for the spring and fall schedules ("fixture card"). Dates are booked on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you would like a specific date in the spring or fall, contact the OVH secretary as early as possible and they will do their best to accommodate you.
